GOOD VIBES CANDLE CO. APP

Scents that make sense

BACKGROUND: Good Vibes Candle Co. needed an app for online shoppers who don’t have the time to visit the shop in person. They would like to easily explore and purchase Good Vibes’ candles without being able to smell them before buying.

SOLUTION: The Good Vibes shopping app utilizes search filters, descriptions and a personal scent quiz, ensuring shoppers will easily find scents that they love. Effectiveness will be measured by evaluating customer ratings and reviews.

USER PERSONAS

I conducted interviews and created empathy maps to understand the users I’m designing for and their needs. A primary user group identified through research was busy, working professionals who, although enjoy purchasing cozy candles for their homes, don’t always have the time to shop in person.

PAPER WIREFRAMES

Taking the time to draft out iterations of each screen of the app ensured that the elements that made it to the digital wireframes would be well-suited to address user pain points.

DIGITAL MOCKUPS AND PROTOTYPES

The low-fidelity prototype connected the primary user flow of searching for and ordering candles, so the prototype could be used in a usability study with users. Helpful insights arose from gathering study findings which allowed for revisions and the creation of a high-fidelity prototype to go on to the next round of user testing.

USABILITY STUDY FINDINGS

  • Users weren’t interacting with the hidden navigation within the dropdown menu. Using a bottom navigation bar instead provided clear and consistent navigation cues, allowing users to always see the current and available options.

  • For some users, it was unclear which stage in the Scent Quiz they were in. Quantifying both the number of questions answered and the number of questions remaining (1 out of 4) in addition to progression bar lets users navigate through the quiz more easily.

  • Users needed a clear and detailed ‘order history’ section with the option to reorder previously purchased products. The new account page includes order history details and the ability to buy individual products again, as well as account and app settings.

IMPACT

The Good Vibes Candle Co. app makes users feel like they are finding the perfect candle for them or for their loved ones. A personalized shopping experience that they will want to revisit.

While designing the Good Vibes Candle Co. app, I learned about how users think as they navigate through their shopping experience. Most users rely heavily on visuals like icons and images to help them explore. Usability studies were incredibly helpful as I worked through each iteration of the design.
